Tourmaline
The name of this gem is derived from the Sinhalese nation in Sri Lanka, Tourmali, which means jewel with mixed colors. When the Dutch brought this stone with them to Europe, they called it tourmaline. Tourmaline was first discovered in Brazil and has become one of the most popular semi-precious stones in the world due to its good hardness and many colors. In nature, tourmaline has the most variety of colors among jewelry minerals, and usually iron, manganese, chromium, copper and vanadium elements are the coloring agents in this stone. The most common color of tourmaline is black, but blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, brown, purple and colorless colors are also found. Tourmaline is also known as October’s birthstone.
Black Tourmaline (Schorl)
Another type of tourmaline, called cheryl, are black pearls that have been used in making jewelry since ancient times. Schorl was usually used in making jewelry that was special for mourning. This stone is shown in shades of brown, blue or blue-green. Schorl is observed as an side mineral in many igneous and metamorphic rocks.
